Official Opening of Gouda Library
The community of Gouda will be enriched with a new R2 million library with the official opening
of Gouda Library on Saturday 24 October, 2009.
The library was located in a classroom at Bakerville Primary school and then in a prefab container,
therefore the need for a new building for the Gouda Library was identified by ward councillor,
Mr Johannes Thomas.
A need for a library was identified in April 2007. The ward councilor for Gouda; Johannes Thomas,
embark on this process to seek a lasting solution, while the library was then residing at the
Bakersville Primary school in Gouda., but due to class space problems at the school,
the library had to vacate the classroom.
In March last year a prefab structure was build in which the library have been resided
with sections for adult and children books as well as encyclopedias for research.
The partnership between Drakenstein Municipality and the Cape Provincial Library Services
have also played a huge role in the opening of the new building.
Cape Provincial Library Services granted a R2 million for the erection of the new Gouda Library,
which will serves a population of plus, minus 7600 people. The current total number of patrons/
readers are 1581, which include both adults and children.
The library have made significant progress in meeting the informational, educational and
recreational needs of the community to the extend that the Gouda community is very
dependant on the library.
Once the paperwork and formalities were agreed upon and signed by all the necessary parties,
the foundation was laid, which saw the birth of the new Gouda Library.
