Motor Registration  

Required documents for different transactions

1.  Registration of a new vehicle:

  • Acceptable identification of the titleholder
  • Acceptable identification of the owner
  • Certificate issued by the manufacture, builder or importer with all the necessary information of the vehicle
  • In case the owner or the titleholder cannot come personally, a written authorization can be given to the person who will do the transaction on behalf of them/him/her.

2.  Registration of a second hand vehicle:

  • Acceptable identification of the titleholder
  • Acceptable identification of the owner
  • The original registration certificate
  • The roadworthy certificate of 6 months or younger
  • In case the owner or the titleholder cannot come personally, a written authorization can be given to the person who will do the transaction on behalf of him/her.

3.  Registration of custom built vehicles:

  • Acceptable identification of the owner
  • SAPD clearance
  • Deregistration certificate/Scrapping identification
  • Roadworthy certificate
  • In case the owner or the titleholder cannot come personally, a written authorization can be given to the person who will do the transaction on behalf of him/her.

4.  Renewal of a motor vehicles license

  • Renewal notice if you are in possession of it (before expiry date or during grace period)
  • Any person can do the renewal

The R30.00 levy on renewal is not for the council, but for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), a body established for effective and sustainable road traffic strategy.

If you are not in possession of the renewal notice after the expiring date:

    • Only the registered owner can do the renewal
    • In his/her absence, a person with a written permission to do the renewal on his/her behalf
    • Both instances a positive identification of the owner and if someone is been send on the owners behalf the party must also produce his positive identification on renewal

 5.  Application for duplicate registration or deregistration certificate.
Please note:  This can only be done by the titleholder. 

6.  Registration of a vehicle received from a will of a deceased person

  • Original registration certificate
  • Acceptable identification of titleholder
  • No clearance certificate if the relationship is man to wife and vice versa
  • For any other relationship eg. father to daughter, son to mother, etc., a clearance certific must be produced
  • Copy of the will that shows that this person have the right to register the vehicle
  • Letter from the executor of the will

Please note:  Only the executor have the right to make the renewal of a license in case the vehicle is in the will.
