The Speaker of Drakenstein Municipality, Cllr.Aidan Charles Stowman was born in Butterworth in the former Transkei, Eastern Cape. He moved with his parents to the Winelands during the early seventies.
He received his early schooling at Ebenezer Primary School in Paarl which was followed by Klein Nederburg Secondary School (Junior Phase). He subsequently matriculated at Noorder - Paarl High School.
After high school he enrolled at Athlone College of Education in Paarl where he qualified as a teacher. His first teaching post was at Orleansvale Primary School where he specialised in Art, Science and Languages on the Senior Primary Level.
After 14 years and 6 months at the mentioned school, the department of education declared him access and he moved on to start on a new venture namely to teach Natural Science, Life Science and Religious Education at Charleston Hill Secondary School in Paarl. After a period lasting 10 years and 6 months it culminated in him serving as Head of Department for Science.

Councilor Stowman’s primary focus later turned to furthering his interest in sport in which he excelled. He was not only involved in sport but also served, as an executive, on numerous committees, unions and community based organisations.
His aptitude and leadership in sport was rewarded by him having captained the following teams:
2011 marked his entrance into local government as the newly elected Ward Councilor for Ward 11 and voting percentages increased exponentially as a result. In 2012 he became a member of the Executive Mayoral Committee for Sport, Culture and Youth matters. He served in this capacity until the Local Government Elections on 03 August 2016.
After the successful election campaign for Local Government Elections 2016, he was re-elected as Ward Councilor for Ward 11 and was nominated by the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Conrad Poole, to serve as Speaker of the Drakenstein council.
The Speaker’s main goal is to establish an effective Council which observes professional courtesy, ensures effective public participation channels with the residents through monitored ward committees and an administration which promotes the principles of transparency, accountability and sound corporate governance.
Councilor AC Stowman is married to Colleen, an Educator – Head of Department, Foundation Phase at St. Albans Primary School in Wellington and they are the parents of Aimee and Luke. His extra mural activities include reading and involvement in sporting and cultural activities.
His vision is that we need change to move forward and realize the potential Drakenstein and South Africa has. We need clean and honest government that is free from corruption and provides good effective, efficient and affordable services. Ensuring that all residents of our towns feel included and to make certain that there is excellent service delivery which are accessible and pro-poor. Connecting people from diverse backgrounds on all spheres of livelihood.
