Please note that the Cape Argus and eNCA have inaccurately reported that Drakenstein Municipality (instead of the Drakenstein economy) has lost more than R800 million in income and 2 200 jobs as a result of the lockdown. In fact, it is the economy of the Drakenstein area (consisting of Paarl, Wellington, Mbekweni, Gouda, Saron, Hermon and Simondium) that has lost R800 million in income and 2 200 jobs during April and May 2020.

What Alderman Conrad Poole, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, in fact said in his Budget Speech to Council on 29 May 2020, is: “Modelling of the Drakenstein economy undertaken by economists show that for the first two months of the lockdown: The Drakenstein economy has lost over R800 million in income; we have lost approximately 2 200 jobs; etc.”

The Municipality has requested the media outlets to place corrections.
