Background | Overview

The "Fair Trade City of Drakenstein" campaign unites the residents towards one course, a course that will boost environmental sustainability, the creation of jobs and supporting local businesses. It is this commitment to a common message and the choices of each individual that changes the lives of small producers and the community. The goal is to increase community engagement around making Drakenstein “A City of Excellence”.

The 5 core goals of a fair trade town

1. Local council passes a Resolution supporting Fair Trade and agreeing to use sustainable, local and Fair Trade products;
2. Sustainable, local and Fair Trade products are readily available in the area’s shops & served in local cafes/catering establishments;
3. Sustainable, local and Fair Trade products are used by a number of local work places & community organisations (faith groups, schools, universities etc);
4. Attract media coverage & popular support for the campaign; and
5. A local Fair Tra steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fair Trade Town status.

What does fair trade mean for the community?

1. Better working conditions for employees;
2. Exposure for sustainable local small businesses operating in Drakenstein;
3. Access to opportunities and markets through campaigns;
4. Health knowledgeable communities;
5. Skills development for businesses to ensure sustainability;
6. Communities that respect the environment; and
7. Communities that understand the value of the discussions they make at the till on the local economy.
