Deputy Executive Mayor/Portfolio Holder Finance
 Drakenstein Municipality:
Councillor Gert Combrink

Gert Combrink was appointed as Deputy Executive Mayor, after he was elected in 2016 for a second term as proportional councillor for Drakenstein Municipality. He continues to hold the position of chairperson for portfolio of  Finance in the Drakenstein Municipality.

Gert was born in Kimberley and grew up in Pretoria. He matriculated from Voortrekker Heights High School in 1975 and completed a Master’s Degree in Agriculture at the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) after completing his National Service. He later enhanced his education by completing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.

Gert is married to Hantie and they have three children.  Magriet is presently employed as Reception Manager at Slaughters Manor House in Lower Slaughter in the United Kingdom while her husband, Hansi Klein, is an interim Hospitality Manager based in Swindon. Stephan is an electronic engineer working for Azotec in Paarl and Willemien is a member of the cabin crew for the Emirates airline and is based in Dubai.

 Executive Deputy Mayor:
Councillor Gert Combrink

Gert led the team at Casidra as General Manager for 19 years, specialising in the areas of rural and entrepreneurial development. One of the highlights of his career was the successful establishment of a Jersey dairy in Kranshoek. He regards the entire project as being a successful one, but the empowerment of the Griqua community to take over and the continued successful running thereof by the community stands out to him in particular. During his involvement with the Kranshoek Jersey project, Gert was elected as a trustee on the Griqua Community Trust by the Griqua Community of Kranshoek.

Over the years, Gert has fulfilled several leadership positions at community level. These include being elected as:

- Chairperson and Treasurer of the La Rochelle Girls’ High School Governing Body
- Chairperson of the Ruyswyck Trust of the La Rochelle Girls’ High School
- Chairperson of the Strooidak Church Financial Commission
- Treasurer of the Courtrai Primary School Governing Body

Having taken early retirement, Gert decided to enter the political arena to enable him to further serve the community and to make a difference at a grassroots level.

Gert and Hantie are active nature lovers and frequently go camping in the wilderness, which includes South African National Parks. They also have extensively toured and camped in Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. Their preferred camping spots in Namibia in particular include community camps, as these help bring tourism income in to the pockets of the local community, rather than into the pockets of multi-national companies.

Being Honorary Rangers for SANPARKS, Gert and Hantie both aim to plough back their energy, knowledge and time to assist in making a small but vital difference in the upkeep of our truly special National Parks.
