Alcohol Harms Reduction(AHR) programme
The Community Development section just started the implementation of the socio economic leg of the Alcohol Harms Reduction(AHR) programme. The activation of the Fairyland Hall was the catalyst for the start of providing alternatives for youth in the area. Approximately 300 youth participated in the 4 a side football tournament and other games as part Alcohol Harms Reduction programme.
The AHR is a partnership programme with the Office of the Premier, the Department of Arts Sports and Culture and the Drakenstein municipality which aims to reduce the harms of alcohol abuse in our communities. Simultaneously it looks at a liquor outlet licensing within the township area.
The Fairyland community hall is now utilised every Friday evening for the sports activities to provide youth with alternatives than to go to shebeens.
The event was attended by the local Councillors and the keynote speaker was the MMC Rita Andreas.
