Paarl Hospital is one of the first hospitals in rural areas that will offer COVID-19 vaccines to registered healthcare workers. The hospital is a service site to all private groups and government staff that have been identified to receive the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
Last week the vaccination of a selected group of healthcare workers (public and private) from the Drakenstein, Stellenbosch and West Coast areas took place here.
Drakenstein Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Conrad Poole, and Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Mayor, Dr Elna von Shlicht, welcomed Provincial MEC for Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, and her delegation to the Cape Winelands area on their visit on Tuesday, 8 March 2021.
Executive Mayor Poole expressed his appreciation to the Western Cape Government for the rollout of the vaccine, and thanked Dr Mbombo and her team for the effort they are putting into making the vaccine available. The aim of the drive is to vaccinate 200 people a day, including private and public healthcare workers.
The roll-out in the Western Cape started on 17 February 2021 in hospitals in the Cape Metropolitan area, followed by George Hospital, Worcester Hospital and now Paarl Hospital. Between the three hospitals, 2 560 doses of vaccines would be administered as part of the second batch of the vaccines to arrive.
Since 17 February 2021, more than 13 400 vaccinations have been administered in the province, and more than 73 000 healthcare workers have been vaccinated across the country.
During the current phase of the vaccine roll-out, healthcare workers can register to be vaccinated, while the broader public will be able to access the vaccine during phases 2 and 3.
