Make sure your prepaid electricity meter gets audited
What to do about expiring electricity meters.

In November 2024, the encryption key in all STS (“Standard Transfer Specification") prepaid electricity meters used in Drakenstein will expire, and consumers using these meters will no longer be able to buy electricity.

That is why Drakenstein Municipality is doing a widespread prepaid electricity meter audit – to make sure that all STS meters' key revision numbers are changed to the required 2-part reset key before the November 2024 deadline for the Token Identifier (TID) roll-over programme. This will ensure that consumers using STS meters will still be able to purchase electricity.

The Municipality's prepaid electricity meter auditors are also ensuring that consumers' prepaid meters are working effectively and have not been interfered with.

Drakenstein Municipality has contracted the company, ONTEC, to undertake the prepaid electricity meter audit on the Municipality's behalf. All auditors will have the following with them at all times:

  • an identity card with a photograph and logo of the Municipality (valid from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2024); and
  • an appointment letter from the Municipality.

The meter auditors started their inspections in Drakenstein on 1 November 2019, and will continue until 30 June 2024. They are under strict instructions to follow all prescribed COVID-19 health protocols and guidelines, and sanitise before and after entering homes or business premises.

Drakenstein Municipality calls on the community of Drakenstein to assist the Municipality by granting the meter auditors access to their residences or businesses to inspect the effectiveness of their prepaid meters. Before allowing them to enter, make sure they are carrying the required identity card and can produce the appointment letter from the Municipality.

The meter auditors visit residences and businesses between 08:00 and 18:00 on weekdays. Where it is not possible to grant them access during these hours, appointments can be made to conduct the meter audit after hours.
