 Press Release

19 September 2018

Drakenstein Municipality wants to warn businesses in particular, and members of the public in general, that a Request for Quotation (RFQ) scam is presently underway.

The Municipality understands that a number of businesses have received emails with a fraudulent RFQ attachment (see an example attached) purporting to be from Drakenstein Municipality, and requesting a quotation for the supply of, for example, overalls and safety boots.

Although the RFQ looks quite legitimate, Drakenstein Municipality wants to make it clear that the Municipality did not issue the RFQ, and that the contact details of the RFQ's initiator (circled in red in the attached example) are false - including the name, telephone numbers, fax number and email address.

Where an institution has responded to a fraudulent RFQ, it appears that the alleged scammers have issued a fraudulent letter of acceptance of quotation, as shown in the second attachment.

Drakenstein Municipality urges the public to exercise caution in responding to any RFQ email request purporting to be from the Municipality, and if in doubt, to call 021 807 4629/6200 or email enquiries.scm@drakenstein.gov.za for verification before proceeding.

Any such fraudulent RFQs should be reported to Drakenstein Municipality at 0800 555 337 or drakenstein@whistleblowing.co.za.
