On behalf of Drakenstein Municipality, I want to welcome all the participants, sponsors and all other role-players to this very special edition of the Berg River Canoe Marathon.

This year the Berg is celebrating its 60th anniversary and it is indeed a very special achievement. Congratulations to all involved for establishing a race with such rich tradition and heritage. This Municipality has a long-standing and special relationship with it.

Last year we felt it with the organisers and paddlers when the race had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 but now that the Berg is back, we share in their joy. A special word of thanks to the organisers who have gone out of their way to make this year’s edition possible.

The Berg River Canoe Marathon is a grueling race and the ultimate challenge for long-distance paddlers. Here legends are made and even though spectators are not allowed this year, we will be following proceedings with keen interest.

I want to wish every participant good luck on the four-day journey. You are brave and just for tackling this challenge, you already deserve a medal.

Long live the Berg!
