Drakenstein Municipality’s Law Enforcement Section, together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mbekweni, arrested two suspected cable thieves near Drommedaris Street in Mbekweni early on Tuesday, 17 May 2022.
While the members were busy with a joint operation they spotted the suspects, who were busy burning cables. The suspects fled the scene and after a pursuit on foot two suspects were arrested.
The officers discovered that approximately 10 meters of cable that was stolen were burned. The suspects were charged for being in possession of stolen goods in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, 2015.
Cable theft has a major impact on communities as it leaves residents, businesses and farmers without electricity. Members of the community are encouraged to report all infrastructure and cable theft incidents to the Municipality’s 24/7 Central Operations Control Centre on 021 807 8508 or 080 131 3553 (toll free).
The Municipality offers a reward of up to R5 000 for information that can lead to the successful arrest and prosecution of suspects. The Municipality takes infrastructure and cable theft seriously and has established a specialised Metal and Cable Theft Unit to curb vandalism, theft of municipal infrastructure, and cable theft.
