Press Release
28 July 2021
Previously indigent consumers who did not lodge an appeal before 27 July 2021 and whose indigent status was not reinstated, should note that Drakenstein Municipality will apply credit control and debt collection measures from 1 August 2021, and suspend the provision of subsidised services to them which include prepaid electricity units.
Earlier this year, the Municipality vetted its registered indigent household database to verify which households still qualify for the Municipality’s indigent subsidy. The vetting, done by an independent external service provider, showed that approximately 4 600 households were no longer indigent and would be required to re-apply for indigent status.
The Municipality communicated directly with these households via SMS and email twice in June and July, informing them of the non-renewal of their indigent status and giving them the opportunity to appeal the decision. The Municipality then extended the cut-off date for lodging appeals until 13 July 2021.
Previously indigent consumers who have any queries can contact the Municipality on 080 131 3553 toll free or email customercare@drakenstein.gov.za.
