Drakenstein Municipality is continuing to provide humanitarian relief aid to the victims of the devastating fire that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in Dromedaris Street, Mbekweni.

On first count it was established that approximately 99 informal dwellings were destroyed and 162 people were left homeless, but following a further survey the number came down to a figure of 75 Informal dwelling place.

On Thursday morning reparation work continued and Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Alderman Conrad Poole, was on the scene to lend support to the affected residents.

No fatalities or injuries were reported on Saturday. Following an assessment of the victims, Drakenstein Municipality provided food parcels, blankets, vanity kits (toiletries) and cooking utensils to the affected families.

Prepared meals are provided by the Municipality in partnership with Cape Winelands District Municipality, the NGO Gift of the Givers and other donors. The Municipality and Gift of the Givers are also issuing starter kits and people have already started rebuilding their Informal dwelling place with old sheets and their own material.

About 60 to 70% of residents have already rebuilt their structures.

Alderman Poole said he felt for the affected families. “It is sad that they have to experience this trauma this time of the year, when everybody should be joyful and preparing for Christmas.

“We applaud those families who have started rebuilding their lives. Drakenstein Municipality and the other role players will continue to support them and we want to restore their dignity as soon as possible so that they too can enjoy Christmas.”

Drakenstein Municipality has provided the required documentation in order for additional assistance to be requested from SASSA.
