The recent heavy rainfall and localised flooding in some areas highlighted a critical issue in many of Drakenstein's communities: blocked stormwater drains.
Drakenstein Municipality's Stormwater teams regularly clean stormwater drains, but with every step we are taking forward, it feels like we are taken one step back. This is because one of the major causes of blocked stormwater drains during rainy weather is illegal dumping and littering.

The photo here shows one of the sites which our teams service weekly on Wednesdays. Illegal littering like you see here not only clogs up our stormwater systems, but also leads to flooding which could have been avoided and which affects everyone in the surrounding areas negatively.
During our ongoing clean-ups, our municipal teams find all sorts of items obstructing the drains - from everyday plastics to larger items such as blankets, towels, mattrasses and even human waste.
The Municipality needs the public's help to keep our drains clear and our stormwater flowing freely.
Please dispose of your waste properly. Use the Municipality's designated mini dumping sites and the containers, skips and bins we provide.
If you see anyone making themselves guilty of illegal dumping, don't turn a blind eye. Report the perpetrators to the Municipality at 𝟬𝟴𝟬 𝟭𝟯𝟭 𝟯𝟱𝟱𝟯 toll free or via our 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗙𝗶𝘅 app.
