Today, Drakenstein Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services welcomed the brand-new fire engine, nicknamed Isuzi, to their fleet!
The Municipality received a R985 000 grant from the Western Cape Government, which made it possible for the Municipality to co-fund the new fire engine valued at R2.9 million. This illustrates strong intergovernmental cooperation between the two spheres of government.
Even though the new fire engine is smaller than her big brothers, her robust built and 4x4 drive feature will enable firefighters to access rough terrain much quicker than with the larger fire engines.
“This vehicle is more than just a machine; it is a symbol of our collective determination to prioritise safety, protect our citizens and serve our community. It is a promise that when disaster strikes, we will be ready to respond swiftly and effectively,” said Councillor Stephen Korabie, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, at the official handover ceremony at the Paarl Fire Station.
Councillor Korabie also highlighted the important role firefighters play in Drakenstein.
“Safety is one of the cornerstones of our service delivery strategic plan. This year we have faced our fair share of challenges - from the devastating fires in our informal settlements to the enormous blaze on the slopes of the majestic Paarl Mountain just three weeks ago. We have been reminded of the unpredictable nature of disasters and the importance of being prepared.
“In the face of these challenges our Disaster Management team has been nothing short of extraordinary. The men and women who make up this team have demonstrated, time and again, that they are the true guardians of Drakenstein. Through their courage, dedication, and swift action, they have protected lives, livelihoods, and the essence of what makes our Drakenstein so special.”
Councillor Korabie said the new fire engine represents the Municipality’s commitment to providing the firefighters with the tools they need to face any emergency.
“Think of it as the shiny new sword to our knight’s armour. Only this sword can pump 1 400 litres of water per minute and navigate through tight urban spaces like a pro!
“Let it also remind us that safety is not just the responsibility of a select few, but a shared commitment that requires vigilance, preparation and support from every one of us. May this new firefighting vehicle be a beacon of safety and hope for all who call Drakenstein home. Here is to a safer, brighter future for our community,” he said.
The Executive Mayor also thanked everyone involved in making this handover possible. “Your efforts are an investment in the future safety and resilience of Drakenstein.”
