25 March 2025 Drakenstein Municipality yesterday successfully concluded clearing up one of its key business areas, Lady Grey Street in Paarl, of illegal and uncontrolled street traders. The Municipality is determined to bring back order to the town’s central business district and ensure the safety of community members who regularly visit the area’s shops, establishments and facilities.
The Municipality had communicated the planned removal verbally and in writing to the illegal traders in advance. This is in accordance with the Municipality’s Bylaw on Informal Trade.
Drakenstein Municipality met with the informal traders who hold permits today, and offered them the option of moving to another suitable trading area in Paarl of their choice, including the taxi rank in Berg River Boulevard in Paarl, Breda Street, Waterkant Street or Patriot Plain.
The legal traders have agreed to make use of this option, and the Municipality will issue these traders with permits for the area of their choice no later than 31 March 2025.
This is, however, an ongoing process and the Municipality is continually engaging with the legal traders.
No permits will be issued for trading in Lady Grey Street from 31 March 2025. There are a total of 15 permits which will be issued for street traders to trade in one of the following sites: the taxi rank in Berg River Boulevard in Paarl, Breda Street, Waterkant Street, or Patriot Plain.
Many of the traders currently trading at the taxi rank in Berg River Boulevard are satisfied with the new facilities, services, as well as the business activity at this site. The Municipality has already installed shading nets, refuse bins and a skip, and there are permanent flush toilets.
