On Saturday, 3 May, Drakenstein Municipality celebrated International Firefighters' Day in fine style, giving a memorable tribute to firefighters worldwide. This day is observed internationally on 4 May annually to honour the firefighters who put their own lives at risk to protect their communities.
The proceedings kicked off with a motorcade that started in Wellington, followed by a team challenge for firefighters at Paarl Mall. Besides the motorcade and competition for the firefighters, there were exhibitions and demonstrations from, amongst others, the Fire and Rescue Services of Drakenstein Municipality and EMS Paarl.
A huge crowd gathered to enjoy what was on show and the drum majorettes from William Lloyd Primary School, the drum band from Paarl Boys’ High School, and The Cape Town Caledonian Bagpipers Band captivated them with electric performances.
The firefighters showed off their exceptional skills, grit and determination during the competition, drawing cheers from the crowd that came to witness them in action. The families and children had a good time exploring the fire engines and other equipment.
The day ended on a high note with a gala and prize-giving ceremony in the Paarl City Hall, where the winners were rewarded for their impressive performances earlier the day.
