The National Department of Transport announced today that South Africa’s driving licence card printing machine has been fixed and operations have resumed. That is good news for Drakenstein’s approximately 7 000 residents who have applied for driver’s licence cards and Public Driving Permits since the start of the year.
These residents have not yet received their cards or permits because not a single one has been issued due to the broken machine. The processing of such applications resorts under the Department of Transport and is done through their Driving Licence Card Account, situated in Pretoria.
Due to the massive backlog, the Department of Transport said working hours for staff members at the Driving Licence Card Account, which is an entity of the Department, would be extended to ensure the reduction of the backlog. Update reports will be issued regularly.
Drakenstein Municipality’s applicants should note that, in terms of the National Road Traffic Act, an expired driving licence card will remain valid for a period of three months from the date of expiry, if a renewal application was made before the expiry date.
The condition for this is that the holder of the licence must be in possession of the expired card and proof of payment. If the situation is not resolved within the three months, an application can be made for a temporary licence, which is valid for six months, or until the new or replacement driving licence card is issued.
The renewal of a driving licence card after its expiry date will automatically require a temporary licence, which costs R45.
