Message by the Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Cllr Stephen Korabie, at the start of the 2025 Berg River Canoe Marathon on 2 July 2025:

It is with immense pride and heartfelt enthusiasm that I welcome all paddlers, organisers, sponsors, supporters and spectators to the 2025 Berg River Canoe Marathon – a truly iconic event on the South African sporting calendar.

As the race sets off this morning from the heart of our beautiful town of Paarl, we are reminded once again of the enduring spirit, resilience and camaraderie that define this extraordinary four-stage journey covering 240 kilometres from Paarl to Velddrif.

This event shines the spotlight on Drakenstein as a leading global destination for sport, wellness and adventure.

This year’s edition of the Berg River Canoe Marathon, the 64th Berg to be exact, promises to be a race for the ages, with canoeing legends such as Hank McGregor and Robbie Herreveld taking on the new generation of champions, including defending titleholder Tom Lovemore.

The women’s race, equally thrilling, showcases the strength and depth of talent in South African paddling, with fierce competition expected from Jenna Nisbett, Stephanie von der Hyde, and rising star Neriyah Dill.

To the athletes: your dedication, discipline and courage inspire us all. To the organisers and volunteers: thank you for your tireless efforts in making this event a world-class spectacle. To the sponsors and supporters: your belief in this race and its values helps it grow stronger each year.

Drakenstein is honoured to be the starting point of the mighty Berg. May the river carry you safely, may the competition be fierce but fair, and may the memories you create here last a lifetime.

Let the race begin!
