21 December 2025

Drakenstein Municipality's Fire and Rescue Services are continuing mop-up operations at Laborie Estate in Paarl on Sunday, 21 December, following the successful containment of the fire yesterday. Fire crews will remain at the scene and are actively monitoring hot spots to ensure that the area remains safe and stable.

The fire broke out at Laborie Estate shortly after midday on Saturday, 20 December, and initially supported from Stellenbosch Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, the Fire Protection Association (FPA), and DFW Fire & Rescue NPC.

Two structures — the Cucina Di Giovanni restaurant and the first wing of the accommodation facilities — were destroyed during the incident. However, the historic Manor House and the second accommodation wing were successfully protected and are now out of danger.

FPA deployed helicopters to assist ground crews with aerial water drops during the containment phase. While wind conditions remain strong, all teams are fully alert and actively monitoring the area to prevent any flare-ups.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage. An investigation will be conducted once mop-up operations have been completed.
