 | Drakenstein Municipality partners up to act against floods

Since 2022, Drakenstein Municipality has been working on the Hybrid Flood Alleviation Programme with the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF). The CFF is a joint initiative by C40 Cities and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) that helps municipalities in developing or emerging economies to convert climate action plans into “bankable” projects. Six priority sites in three sub-catchments of Drakenstein were chosen to help reduce flood risks, while also creating green spaces, generating jobs, and protecting our community from climate change.
The development of this programme, which concluded on Thursday, 16 April 2026, showed the strength of teamwork, with the Municipality’s environmental and stormwater teams leading the way – supported by partners such as the CFF, GIZ, Consulate-General of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Deputy Consulate-General of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
However, the work is not done.
Drakenstein Municipality must ensure that the next steps are taken towards the implementation of these six priority projects. A new Rivers Management Programme is also planned and will make sure our rivers protect homes and businesses, while improving the beautiful natural spaces of Drakenstein that make the area such a special place to live in.
