Drakenstein Municipality is preparing for planned upgrades and maintenance work at Paarl's flagship Faure Street Stadium, with the intention of expanding opportunities for athletes, schools, and community clubs. The proposed work includes rehabilitating the stadium's century‑old cycling track – home to the iconic Boxing Day Race and training facility for young cyclists from local clubs and the DSV Cycling Academy.
The local athletics community has expressed the need for a grass athletics track, which will also offer schools and clubs an alternative training venue and reduce pressure on Paarl's Dal Josaphat Stadium.
Together, these planned improvements reflect the Municipality's ongoing support for school sport, community‑based training programmes and the creation of opportunities for young athletes to develop their talent closer to home.
The project will also help preserve an important sporting asset with deep historical significance for Paarl and the broader Drakenstein community.
Drakenstein Municipality's Sport Section will continue to manage bookings of the upgraded Faure Street Stadium in accordance with existing booking procedures and the applicable tariff schedule.
The Municipality will share progress updates via municipal communication channels, local media and radio stations, with opportunities for community input as the process progresses.
Meanwhile, Drakenstein Municipality continues to prioritise safe, well‑maintained public spaces and is currently exploring potential future uses for the Weltevrede Sport Complex in Van Wyksvlei, Wellington, including sport and housing opportunities.
Preliminary planning has commenced, which includes initial studies and research to inform possible development options over the long term.
The Municipality remains committed to considering options that promote accessible spaces and support community needs.
