A historic moment unfolded for the Wellington community today with the official opening of the Wellington Community Hall – a space that will serve as a home for gatherings, development and opportunity.
Residents, community members and learners from St Alban Primary School and Wellington Primary School gathered to witness the opening of the hall, which had been closed to the broader community for many years.
Speaking at the opening, Drakenstein Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Stephen Korabie, reflected on the significance of returning the hall to the community.
“For many Wellington residents, this hall has always been part of their story ... we are not just opening a hall – we are opening opportunities."
The Executive Mayor continued to say that this space would support community meetings, youth initiatives, sports activities and social development programmes.
He said the Municipality invested in purchasing and restoring the hall to ensure it could once again serve the people of Wellington.
“This hall belongs to the people of Wellington. We ask the community to look after it and take pride in it."
In attendance was Western Cape Minister for Social Development, Jaco Londt, who said the hall represented more than just a building.
“We have heard stories of the past connected to this hall, but now a new generation will create its own story here," Londt said.
The opening of the Wellington Community Hall marks a new chapter for the community – one focused on unity, opportunity and development for future generations.
