Working together to stabilise the national grid

16 September 2026 | Press Releases

Drakenstein Municipality is running a Demand Side Management Programme which focuses on reducing electricity demand during peak hours by temporarily switching off household geysers. The aim of the programme is to help stabilise the national electricity grid.

Household geysers in Paarl, Wellington and Simondium form part of this programme. Due to recent changes to Eskom’s peak hours, these geysers will now be switched off from:

• 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning; and
• 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening.

Why is it important for Drakenstein households to participate in this programme?

Geysers are one of the biggest electricity users in our homes. By pausing them for short periods, we lower demand on the grid, reduce the risk of blackouts, and support Eskom in delivering reliable electricity.

How long will this programme run?

This is part of a multi-year project to make South Africans’ electricity use more efficient.

Your role matters.

Every household’s cooperation makes a difference. Together, we can ease pressure on the grid, protect our community from outages, and contribute to more reliable electricity supply.
