Executive Mayor Conrad Poole wishes residents a happy Human Rights Day

21 March 2023 | Press Releases

“Today, it is my honour to wish the whole of our beautiful Drakenstein community – one that is vibrant and rich in culture – a happy Human Rights Day.

As South Africans we have learned that our differences are what make us strong as a nation, and the same is true for Drakenstein. We must always strive to protect, respect, and uphold our shared human rights.

It’s important to not only celebrate and respect our diversity on this day, but to make it a habit on every day of the year – whether it be in the workplace, while on the road, on the sports field, or at our respective places of worship.

There is a Zulu proverb called ‘Ubuntu’ that goes: “I am a person through other people. My humanity is tied to yours.” This principle reminds us to show care and concern for our neighbours and never forget our shared humanity.

On behalf of Drakenstein Municipality, it is my wish that the spirit of Ubuntu be at the heart of all we do.

Let us use the South African experience and our diversity to have empathy and respect for one another, reach out when people are in need, and support one another.”
