 | Keep sewage manholes and stormwater drains clean to prevent overflows and pollution

Drakenstein Municipality is appealing to our residents to please refrain from dumping household refuse and general rubbish in sewer and stormwater drains, manholes and rainwater channels. These water conduits are critical for reticulating normal sewer and stormwater effluent, especially when these systems are under severe pressuring during the winter rain season, which is fast approaching.
A sewage overflow was recently reported in Paarl. The Municipality's essential services workers completed an intensive clean-up on the same day and discovered that the affected main line blockage was caused by a blanket left in one of the main sewage manholes. This specific incident is due to vagrants who discard items in municipal open spaces. However, many other blockages are often caused by items like clothes, shoes, bags, and even mattresses.
The Municipality therefore implores our residents to play their part in keeping drains and stormwater canals clear of refuse and general waste. We also ask that residents do not flush unsuitable items down the toilet. Items that should not be flushed down toilets include wet wipes, floss, toxic substance, cigarette butts, cotton butts, serviettes, baby nappies, sanitary pads and tampons, newspaper, cloth and fabric, fatty food or fat.
