On 21 March, Drakenstein Municipality hosted a well-attended event in celebration of Human Rights Day, and a group of women’s selfless dedication to their community.
Local children from Chicago in Paarl East are fortunate to have a team of dedicated "Caring Moms" on their side – a group of local women who make it their daily mission to see that the community’s children get to school, and return home, safely.
Many of these children live amidst gang violence and a culture of substance abuse, and often feel unsafe travelling to and from school. Out of concern for their wellbeing, the "Caring Moms" do their best to encourage the children to complete their schooling and escape the cycle of poverty and unemployment.
The Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Conrad Poole, delivered a powerful motivational message in which he celebrated the "Caring Moms" as guardians of human rights. In partnership with Drakenstein Municipality, these women are instrumental in helping Paarl East’s children to complete their studies and become the leaders of tomorrow.
“Community involvement like this sends a powerful message to our children. It’s a message that says you are important, you are safe, and you have a purpose. Thank you for your selfless service,” Alderman Poole said.
Member of the Mayoral Committee Eva Gouws opened the event and also thanked the "Caring Moms" for their contributions.
The Municipality’s Social Development division will be presenting more programmes of this kind during Youth Month in June 2023.
