23 March 2023

Clean water is essential for life, and Drakenstein’s Mbeko Eco Club is dedicated to protecting the area’s water resources. The club’s mission is to improve and protect the water quality of the Berg River waterways, as well as watersheds within the river’s catchment area in Mbekweni.

Today marks the United Nations’ World Water Day which aims to raise awareness among communities of the importance of using water sparingly, and of playing our part in water conservation initiatives.

One crucial aspect of water conservation is the reduction of pollution of our water sources.

As part of their week-long Water Journey World Water Day Awareness Campaign, the Mbeko Eco Club held a River Health Monitoring and Clean-Up on 22 March at the Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works. Partnering with Drakenstein Municipality’s Solid Waste and Landfill Management division, teams of volunteers removed waste in affected areas of the Berg River.

Various stakeholders joined hands in this initiative, including:

The National Department of Water and Sanitation;
The Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning;
Drakenstein Municipality’s Solid Waste and Landfill Management division;
Veolia Water South Africa (Pty) Ltd (an environmental, social and governance company working on environmental challenges); and
Several local schools.

Some of the speakers who addressed the attendees were Cindy Winter, Manager: Environmental Management at Drakenstein Municipality, as well as Marlé Kunneke, Task Manager: Water Quality – Berg River Improvement Plan at the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

The Municipality encourages members of the public to report incidents of water pollution to customercare@drakenstein.gov.za or via Drakenstein Municipality’s SeeClickFix app – click here to find out how: Drakenstein - SeeClickFix.
