Together, Drakenstein Municipality and the Western Cape Department of Local Government are taking on the challenges of continuation of critical basic services during Eskom loadshedding.
The Western Cape Government awarded Drakenstein Municipality an Emergency Municipal Loadshedding Relief Grant (EMLRG) allocation of R6 million, to be spent on back-up generators at key water and wastewater infrastructure installations. The Municipality allocated another R6 million from its mid-year capital expenditure adjustment budget to extend the mitigation achieved. Based on the urgency of the intervention, the award was made at the end of January 2023 – to be completed by the end of June 2023.
The funding focuses on the Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works; the Conrad Wastewater Pumpstation; the Perold Water Pumpstation; the Paarl Civic Centre and Communications Centre; the Municipality’s Market Street Building and Coordination Centre; as well as the Paarl East Housing Offices.
Other initiatives include the installation of Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems at traffic light intersections on main routes to increase vehicle safety during Eskom loadshedding.
Drakenstein Municipality is grateful for the support received from the Western Cape Government in funding this important risk mitigation. It will continue to monitor the impact of Eskom loadshedding on the levels of basic services, and mitigate any risks to the provision of safe and clean water and continued operational sanitation.
