Drakenstein Municipality is aware of a video that is circling on social media, claiming that Paarl residents should be careful of drinking municipal tap water. The video, showing small organisms in water that allegedly came from an outside tap at a private residence in a Northern Paarl estate, was posted by the owner of the residence yesterday.
The Municipality made contact with this resident this morning and understands that the tap has not been used for quite some time, as well as that a hosepipe has been attached to the tap.
The Municipality has collected water samples at the residence itself as well as at the bulk water meter providing water to the private estate, which it will have tested, and communicate the results to the resident and the Drakenstein community.
There is a strong possibility that the organisms are larvae that hatched in the section of the water pipe that is connected to the tap, or inside the hosepipe, due to these not haven’t been used for quite some time. Larvae is commonly found in standing or stagnant water. Larvae won’t be able to survive in the larger water distribution network of the Municipality, due to the high water pressure being applied in the network.
Drakenstein Municipality can assure residents that there is absolutely no reason for concern. The Municipality is recognised for the high-quality, clean potable water that it provides to residents. The Municipality’s water is tested bi-weekly and adheres to the national standards, SANS 241, which stipulate the specifications for drinking water quality in South Africa.
