The South African Weather Service has predicted more adverse weather conditions for the Western Cape for the next couple of days.
Drakenstein Municipality encourages our residents, businesses and rural areas to please take precautions, and to clear their homes' gutters and downpipes from leaves and debris - to prevent obstructions and flooding, and to assist the flow of stormwater. It is important to check that drains are open to avoid objects from blocking the flow of water from properties.
We also urge residents to have sandbags ready to block the flow of water into their properties. Residents are encouraged to assemble your own sandbags (or soil pillows) to prepare for potential flooding.
You can use pillowcases or any material bags and fill them with sand or garden soil. Stamp down on the filled bags until there are no gaps, but be careful not to overfill them. Lay a plastic sheet or bin bag on the ground underneath and arrange the bags to overlap like bricks in a wall. This will be an effective barrier to keep water out of homes. Also keep in mind that doors are not the only place water can come in. Check toilets, sinks, floorboards, and airbricks too. For sinks, anything heavy will work to hold the plug in place if you do not have enough sandbags.
In the meanwhile, Drakenstein Municipality's emergency response plans are in place and all efforts have been made to remove illegal dumping, litter and any other possible obstructions that could block the flow of stormwater and exacerbate flooding. The Municipality has further put in place targeted preventative measures to minimise potential infrastructure damage and electricity outages, and to clear stormwater drains and channels on a large scale if required. The Municipality's Traffic Services are also ready to monitor the roads to help prevent accidents and traffic congestion in susceptible areas.
