Yesterday afternoon (6 July 2023), the Vitality Netball Trophy Tour made a stop at Paarl East SUPERSPAR as part of its Western Cape leg. Drakenstein Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Conrad Poole attended the event alongside Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais and Netball South Africa president, Cecilia Molokwane.
The trophy handover ceremony drew a large crowd and was kicked off with a brass band, poem reading and dancing entertainment. The spectators were delighted to see Executive Mayor Poole and Minister Marais, along with several Drakenstein councillors, participating in a few netball shootouts!
“The Netball World Cup tournament represents the pinnacle of achievement in this sport. The journey that has brought us here today is built on years of dedication, sacrifice, and hard work by both players and their support staff. During this tournament, we will witness exciting matches filled with breath-taking displays of athleticism,” Alderman Poole said.
“Having the trophy visit Drakenstein provides an exciting opportunity for our local communities to engage with international netball and celebrate its achievements. But this occasion is not just about the players on the court; it is also a celebration of the spirit of sportsmanship. It is a time when nations come together and set aside differences to honour the values of fair play, respect, and friendship.”
