September is Tourism Month in South Africa! Destination Paarl-Wellington will be showcasing how we are implementing this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Green Investments – Investing in People, Planet and Prosperity”, through a range of programmes, projects and initiatives.
The tourism sector’s recovery journey has not been an easy one, and Drakenstein Municipality remains committed to collaborating with our industry partners so that we can invite the world to explore Paarl-Wellington and rediscover what gives balance to life… all in one place.
Our destination’s natural beauty is our prized asset, so it is important to protect our environment and encourage sustainable tourism practices. We will be partnering with local tourism businesses to develop a Drakenstein-wide sustainable tourism route.
On World Tourism Day, 27 September 2023 – in the spirit of Heritage Month – we are looking forward to launching the Paarl East Street Museum and strengthening our heritage tourism offering.
One of our initiatives is Fair Fridays, which have been providing our local entrepreneurs with a marketing platform to showcase their businesses to locals over the last two years. Last month Paarl-Wellington played host to our first #slowfashion thrift market experience.
As much as we encourage digitisation and automation in the sector, connecting with locals remains one of the best ways to make a tourism experience memorable. That is why visiting local markets is a great way of exploring your local surroundings and in doing so, you support both local entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development.
Drakenstein Municipality is also proud to announce that this year we have trained nine unemployed young people as tourist guides. We are thrilled to begin this journey with these new entrants to our industry and are inspired by their enthusiasm and drive to become tourism trailblazers.
This Tourism Month we encourage our residents to either support our local business or go out there and experience some of our variety of offerings.
