The swimming season is here and the Drakenstein Municipality staff at the various public swimming pools and resorts in Drakenstein are ready to welcome residents to these facilities.
All the swimming pools in the Drakenstein municipal area reopened on Sunday, 1 October 2023, for the swimming season which will last until 31 March 2024. These include the Drakenstein swimming pool (corner of Klein Drakenstein Road and Van der Stel Street, Paarl East); Faure Street swimming pool (Faure Street, Paarl); Mbekweni swimming pool (Phokeng Street, Mbekweni); Pentz Street swimming pool (Upper Pentz Street, Wellington); and the Weltevrede swimming pool (Bloekom Avenue, Weltevrede, Wellington).
Aside from making sure that the swimming facilities are ready for all the eager swimmers to either cool down in the water or sunbathe on the lawns, Yvette Tsolo, Manager of Sport and Recreation at the Municipality, and her team of trained professionals carefully selected the lifeguards who keep a watchful eye on the swimmers.
Fifty-five (55) lifeguards were selected and appointed out of more than 200 candidates.
According to Tsolo the lifeguards underwent rigorous training to make sure they are fit and equipped to know how to act in life-threatening situations.
“The safety of all swimmers is our main priority. We ask that all swimmers behave in a responsible manner and respect the rules at the swimming pools. It is in everyone’s best interest,” said Tsolo.
The opening hours for all swimming pools are from 10:00 to 19:00 daily, including weekends.
The costs are R10 for adults (16 to 59 years) and R5 per child (15 years and under). Entry for the elderly (persons of 60 and over) is free with proof of ID document.
