 | Eskom loadshedding still poses operational challenges for wastewater treatment works

24 October 2023
Drakenstein Municipality is working hard to restore its sewerage processes to optimal treatment capacity, following earlier persistent high-stage Eskom loadshedding.
At our Wellington and Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works, the long-term effect of erratic loadshedding remains an operational challenge. It causes reduced oxygen supply to the aerobic treatment process, preventing it from operating at optimum capacity at all times. That is why residents and business owners of Wellington might occasionally notice a smell in the area.
Please be assured that the Municipality is not releasing raw sewerage into the Berg River. We have additional back-up generators in place for both the Wellington and Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works to assist with processing sewerage.
