Proud Drakenstein pledges solid support to Boks

27 October 2023

The history books couldn’t have orchestrated it any better: the final of all finals!

As excitement is mounting for the epic final of the 10th edition of the Rugby World Cup, Drakenstein Municipality pledges our solid support to the Springboks to be the team lifting the Web Ellis Cup tomorrow night. And when it comes to our six very own Boks being part of the green-and-gold squad in France, our hearts simply burst with pride!

While Drakenstein Municipality recognises the historical significance and importance of Die Stoepe (it is one of the 25 meaningful sites featured in our newly launched Paarl East Street Museum Route), we have to respect and heed the instruction of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to not host a fan park here.

SAPS earlier declared this area a red zone due to several shooting incidents taking place here over the last few months. Any formal event organised here would be considered a medium-risk event, and anyone organising a formal event here without SAPS’ written approval would be in contravention of the Events Management Act.

Drakenstein Municipality did propose a safer alternative venue to the organiser, i.e. the Boland Park Stadium in Paarl; however, the organiser rejected this proposal.

In the interest of our community’s safety, the Municipality must support SAPS in their decision and cannot deviate from legislation.

We do however back our national team 100% and call on all our residents to watch, and hopefully, celebrate in a responsible and respectful manner. Be sure to make it a family event and watch it in a safe environment.

All the best to our local boys and the rest of the Springbok team – bring that cup back to where it belongs!

We are indeed #StrongerTogether!
