#TIP 4: Teach your children about fire safety

It is important for everyone – including children – to be informed, stay alert and know how to call for help.

🧑🏾‍🚒 Teach your children what to do if their clothes catch fire: Stop, Drop, and Roll. They should stop moving, drop to the ground, cover their face with their hands, and roll back and forth to extinguish the flames.

🧑🏾‍🚒 You can also teach your kids to stay low to the ground if there is smoke in the air. Smoke rises, so the air near the floor is usually clearer, and easier to breathe in.

🧑🏾‍🚒 Make sure your children understand that matches and lighters are tools, not toys. Stress the importance of not playing with fire.

🧑🏾‍🚒 Don't overload outlets: Teach your kids not to overload electrical outlets. Explain to them that using too many appliances in one outlet can lead to electrical fires.

🧑🏾‍🚒 Put together and practice a home emergency exit plan with your children, and practice regular fire drills. Teach your kids where to meet outside in case of a fire, and that they should not hide inside when there's a fire.

🧑🏾‍🚒 Once you have evacuated never go back into the building.
