“In my capacity as Speaker of Drakenstein Municipality, it has come to my attention that rumours are doing the rounds, both inside and outside the Council, regarding Alderman Conrad Poole, the former Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality.
“The most pernicious of these rumours is that Alderman Poole demanded payment from colleagues who wished to be appointed to positions that he was entitled to fill in his capacity as Executive Mayor.
“When these allegations reached my office, I initiated an investigation into them, as it was my obligation to do. The Council contracted a respected independent law firm to undertake the investigation.
“From the start of the investigation, Alderman Poole gave his full cooperation, demonstrating a commitment to clearing his name and proving his innocence.
“I wish to state categorically that throughout this investigation, no evidence emerged to substantiate this allegation. I was elected to this office by a party that is committed to the rule-of-law and believes that everyone has the right to be regarded as innocent, until they are convicted on the basis of solid evidence.
“No such evidence has emerged in relation to Alderman Poole, and we will defend his rights in law, not to be tarnished by unsubstantiated rumours.
“We know that his highest priority is to continue serving his community where he has a widespread and dedicated following.”
