Drakenstein Municipality’s new Executive Mayor delivers first Budget Speech

On Thursday, 30 May 2024 at 13:30, Drakenstein Municipality’s new Executive Mayor, Councillor Stephen Korabie, delivered his first Budget Speech and tabled the Municipality’s R4.1 billion budget, its largest to date, for the 2024/25 financial year.
The Executive Mayor explained how the Municipality intends on dealing with challenges such as relentless infrastructure vandalism and rising maintenance costs; shrinking national grants; growing numbers of indigents; illegal dumping hotspots; and climate change and weather curveballs.
He gave details on how the Municipality will ensure that its books balance, its finances remain stable, it keeps on delivering excellent, reliable and uninterrupted services for all residents and businesses in Drakenstein, and it enhances the quality of life for its most vulnerable residents.
In his speech, he reflected on the previous financial year’s service delivery highlights and shared focus areas for 2024/25, such as:
  1. Promoting economic growth and new developments (in a planned and structured manner) to stimulate job creation for local communities and a growing number of indigents;
  2. Managing urbanisation;
  3. Promoting sound financial management, good governance and fiscal discipline;
  4. Renewed focus on public safety; and
  5. Promoting Paarl-Wellington as a premier and global sport, adventure, wellness and sustainable tourism destination.
