Drakenstein Municipality’s first Bike2Work day will take place this Friday, 4 December 2020, and cyclists across Drakenstein are gearing up for the event. The Bike2Work day is part of a wider campaign to encourage residents and staff to take up a more active, healthier lifestyle in what is increasingly becoming known as Cycle City.
The four Bike2Work routes will be monitored and controlled by our traffic and law enforcement officials. The routes are:
1. Wellington (Blouvlei Road) to the Paarl Civic Centre (12.6km)

Each of these routes will have a number of “bus stops” where people can join the event. Volunteers will be on duty at these stops to assist cyclists. The details of the routes and bus stops are available ---> here.
The first group will leave from the various starting points at 6:30 and will be followed by other groups until 10:00. Each group will be accompanied by experienced riders on the clearly marked and monitored routes. All prescribed COVID-19 health protocols will be in place. Riders will not have to wear masks while riding, but will need to wear a mask before and after the ride.
The same routes will be monitored and controlled by the Municipality’s traffic and law enforcement officials again from 15:30 to 17:30 in the afternoon to assist cyclists to get home safely.
The aim of this event is to encourage, develop and promote cycling in Drakenstein for all residents. “It is events like these that bring together friends, families and even complete strangers for a healthy fun activity. Cycling is also regarded as a potential driver in the recovery of our tourism sector and the local economy,” says Alderman Conrad Poole, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality.
Everyone is welcome to join in on the Bike2Work Day. Strict rules of the road as well as cycling safety regulations will be in place and must be adhered to at all times. Participants in the Bike2Work event should make the necessary arrangements with their place of work if they expect to arrive at work later than their stipulated starting time.
Participants should please follow these rules:
• You must wear a helmet. No helmet, no ride. The helmet must fit properly and have chin straps that fasten;
• You are not allowed to carry a person, animal or object which obstructs your view;
• Ride with the flow of traffic, not against it. Ride in single file;
• Don’t use earphones while cycling. You must be able to use all your senses;
• No person riding or seated on a bike may take hold of any other vehicle in motion; and
• Cyclists should at all times be in compliance with road traffic signs or directions given by a traffic officer.
