The Green Ranger Project - Safeguarding Paarl Mountain and the Arboretum

30 April 2024 | Press Releases

30 April 2024

In response to rising concerns over safety and security in Paarl Mountain and the Paarl Arboretum, Drakenstein Municipality’s Department for Public Safety has taken action, in collaboration with its Parks team who takes responsibility for these areas.

Supported by the Municipality’s Law Enforcement unit, we have introduced a special programme to tackle these challenges head-on. This programme will introduce ‘Green Rangers’ in these areas, with a special focus on making the areas safer and more accessible to visitors.

Our Green Rangers stand as vigilant protectors of Paarl’s natural treasures, tasked not only with maintaining its ecological integrity but also ensuring the safety and well-being of all visitors. From combating illegal occupation to safeguarding the local plants and animals, their duties include a wide array of responsibilities. Trained in peacekeeping, snare handling, and various biodiversity-related skills, these rangers are equipped to handle various situations.

Their role is not just about enforcing rules and regulations; it's also about fostering a culture of conservation and responsible enjoyment of the reserve. Through guided walks, educational programmes, and community outreach, they aim to deepen public appreciation for the Paarl Mountain Reserve and the Arboretum’s ecological significance.

To qualify as a Green Ranger, candidates must have a matric certificate, a clean criminal record, and be registered on the municipal workers' database.

With the Green Rangers on duty, residents and visitors alike can rest assured that Paarl’s natural treasures will remain peaceful and safe for generations to come.

For emergencies or to report any incidents, visitors are encouraged to contact the Nature Conservationist, Mr. Lindsay Lewis, at 021 807 6231 or 073 748 6325, or via email at Lindsay.Lewis@drakenstein.gov.za.
