Drakenstein Municipality's Mayoral Arbor Day event was held at the Paarl Arboretum today (Friday, 2 September 2022) and it coincided with the opening of the new Eco Classroom at the northern entrance of the Arboretum.

Other activities included tree planting, exhibitions, arts and crafts, a photo booth and cycling.

The event was attended by the Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Alderman Conrad Poole, the City Manager, Dr Johan Leibbrandt, Mayoral Committee Member for Parks, Waste and Cemeteries, Lorraine Cyster, other Members of the Mayoral Committee and councillors, administrative staff, learners and teachers from local schools, as well as other interested parties.

Ward Councillor Johan Miller welcomed the guests and made some opening remarks.

Cindy Winter, Manager of Environmental Management, gave an overview of the Arboretum Upgrading Project – part of the Climate Partnership that was concluded in 2014 between Drakenstein Municipality and the City of Neumarkt in Germany. It focuses on climate change, fair trade, and environmental education.

Addressing attendees, Alderman Poole said it was a great honour and privilege to share this day with everyone and be part of this particularly important event – to be part of a programme that seeks to add value through the greening of the Municipality.

“Yesterday we welcomed spring and this year's theme is: ‘Trees are terrific for today and tomorrow.’

“Drakenstein Municipality has a vision to build a world-class city – a city capable of providing excellent services and safer communities where people can live in sustainable and lively urban spaces.

“We have formed a partnership with the City of Neumarkt, and this partnership is focused on environmental and ecological sustainability. We share this vision and are proud of what we have achieved together here in Drakenstein, and excited about more projects that are in the pipeline.

“To plant a tree is a symbol of hope. It symbolises faith in the future – the future of our communities and our planet. It brings people together – with one another and Mother Nature. It is a living, breathing gift to our future generations.”

The Executive Mayor concluded by thanking everybody present for their contribution to a better future for everyone.
