Human Rights Day Message by Executive Mayor Conrad Poole

21 March 2022 | Press Releases

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY MESSAGE BY EXECUTIVE MAYOR CONRAD POOLE:

Few people could imagine that we would live in a time that is seeing reportedly the largest attack on a European country since the Second World War, a time that is seeing an ongoing global pandemic that has already changed our lives. Both are having a devastating impact on economies and people’s daily wellbeing and livelihood.

In South Africa, we have learned – the hard way – that human rights should be protected at all times, respected and upheld. If not, the consequences can be far-reaching, dangerous and dehumanising.

On Human Rights Day, we celebrate the freedom, justice and peace that were attained - values that Drakenstein Municipality places a high value on and strives for daily.

We have learnt tough lessons that we are sharing with the world, and which gave us a particular perspective as a nation. Let us never take our eye off the ball. Let us use the South African experience and our diversity to have empathy and respect for one another, reach out when people are in need, and support one another.
